The Houston Dash showed resilience Wednesday night at Shell Energy Stadium, battling back late to earn a dramatic 2-2 draw against San Diego Wave in NWSL action.
San Diego opened the scoring in the 19th minute as Dudinha finished a dangerous attack to give the visitors a 1-0 lead. The Dash spent much of the match searching for an equalizer while San Diego continued to pressure Houston’s defense.
Houston finally found its breakthrough in the 69th minute when Kate Faasse scored to level the match at 1-1, giving the home fans new energy heading into the final stretch.

Just a few minutes later, concern filled the stadium in the 74th minute after goalkeeper Jane Campbell took a hard hit during play. Campbell was seen bleeding and had to leave the field while going through concussion protocol, creating an emotional moment for both teams. UCF Golden Knight Caroline DeLisle made her NWSL debut after replacing the Dash captain.
Kat Rader gave Houston the lead in the 88th minute, sending the crowd into celebration as it looked like the Dash had completed the comeback. However, San Diego responded deep into stoppage time when Trinity Byars scored in the 90+4th minute to rescue a late 2-2 draw for the Wave.
The night marked an important moment for the Houston Dash, who ended a 47-day drought without an open-play goal after finally scoring from the run of play. While there is relief that Houston could be getting back to their scoring ways, the question is how consistent will this approach be to keep contesting for results.
"We challenged the group to a complete performance in terms of starting on the front foot defensively. I thought we did quite a good job against a really good team in possession. We tried to limit their six as much as possible. Obviously, some of them still got on the ball, but it's a team that normally can switch the ball consistently against teams, and so I'm proud of the group. I thought players left everything on the line, obviously disappointed not to come out with the win, especially so late, but really, really proud of the group."
Houston Dash head coach Fabrice Gautrat
The team shift their focus to their last home game before the FIFA World Cup break this Saturday, May 23 against Angel City.
