The Houston Dash returned home this weekend with a mission: shake off a tough road loss and get back on track against a resilient Racing Louisville side. In what turned out to be one of the most chaotic matches in NWSL history, the Dash secured a massive 4-3 victory in front of their home fans.

A Shaky Start and VAR Drama

The Dash lineup saw a significant late change, as Makenzy Robbe was sidelined with an injury. Messiah Bright stepped into the starting eleven to fill the void.

The match’s high-octane nature was established early. In the 23rd minute, a handball in the box prompted a VAR review, which ultimately granted Louisville a penalty. Taylor Flint converted from the spot to put the visitors up 1-0. However, the Dash responded before the break. In the 39th minute, a foul on Malia Berkely earned Houston their own penalty, which Kat Rader finished coolly to level the score.

1st Half Analysis

At 1-1, it was a tactical stalemate. Houston's defensive lapses that have plagued them recently were still visible.

The Kiki Van Zanten Show

The second half began with a familiar, frustrating sight for Dash fans. For the second week in a row, Houston conceded almost immediately after halftime with Louisville’s Sarah Weber making it 2-1 in the 48th minute. But the lead didn't last. Midfielder Danny Colaprico served up a perfect ball to Kiki Van Zanten, who struck back instantly to equalize. Van Zanten wasn't finished; in the 67th minute, brace, giving Houston their first lead of the night at 3-2.

The drama hit a fever pitch in the 81st minute when Racing Louisville was awarded another penalty—the third of the game—to tie it up at 3-3.

The Final Blow

With 10 minutes of stoppage time added, the tension at Shell Energy Stadium was palpable. In the dying moments, the referee pointed to the spot for the fourth penalty of the match. Sarah Puntigam stepped up under immense pressure and converted, securing the 4-3 win and sitting at 5th Place in the NWSL standings.

"I think the mentality of the group to continue to fight and stay in the game after conceding right after the half is what defines us. Kiki is in incredible form right now, and her ability to find those pockets was the difference tonight." — Head Coach Fabrice Gautrat
