The NWSL returned from its midseason break with a match full of drama, emotion, and late-game heroics as the Houston Dash suffered a heartbreaking 2–1 defeat to the Washington Spirit on the road.

From the opening whistle, both teams played with energy, knowing the importance of starting the second half of the season on the right foot. Washington created the better chances early, but Houston's defense stood firm behind goalkeeper Jane Campbell, who delivered one of the night's biggest moments.

In the 34th minute, the Spirit were awarded a penalty after Avery Patterson was ruled to have committed a foul while falling inside the penalty area. With momentum on Washington's side, Campbell stepped up in spectacular fashion, diving to make a brilliant penalty save and keeping the match scoreless. The save energized the Dash and ensured the teams entered halftime deadlocked at 0–0.

Washington continued to push after the break and finally found the breakthrough in the 50th minute. Trinity Rodman found space in the attack and calmly finished to give the Spirit a 1–0 lead, putting Houston under pressure for the remainder of the second half.

Rather than folding, the Dash continued to battle. Houston increased its attacking pressure in the closing stages, searching for a breakthrough that would reward the team's resilience. Their persistence finally paid off in the 89th minute, when Kate Faasse found the back of the net to level the match at 1–1. The late equalizer silenced the home crowd and looked to have earned Houston a valuable point in its first match back from the break.

But the drama was not over.

Deep into stoppage time, with the clock showing 90+4 minutes, Washington launched one final attack. Once again, Trinity Rodman proved to be the difference. Rodman struck the winning goal in the dying moments, sending the home supporters into celebration and crushing Houston's hopes of leaving the nation's capital with a result.

The final whistle confirmed a dramatic 2–1 victory for the Washington Spirit in one of the most exciting matches since the NWSL resumed play.

Although the Dash left disappointed, there were encouraging moments to build on. Jane Campbell's crucial penalty save kept Houston alive when it mattered most, while Kate Faasse's late equalizer showcased the team's determination and refusal to quit. Despite the heartbreaking finish, the Dash displayed resilience and fighting spirit that they will look to carry into the next match as the NWSL season continues.
