The Houston Dash will head into the 2026 FIFA World Cup break after a tough 1-0 road loss to Gotham FC on Sunday afternoon. Playing away from home, the Dash battled throughout the match but were unable to recover after conceding an early goal. The defeat dropped Houston to 11th place in the NWSL standings, while also marking the return of captain Jane Campbell after missing one match due to injury.
Campbell returned to the starting lineup after suffering a head injury during Houston's home match against the San Diego Wave. The veteran goalkeeper was forced to leave that contest following a collision and subsequently missed the Dash's next match while recovering. Against Gotham, Campbell returned to the lineup and provided a strong performance despite the result. The home side opened the scoring in the 17th minute, giving Gotham a 1-0 advantage. Houston responded well after the early setback, settling into the match and creating opportunities of its own while remaining disciplined defensively.
Throughout the first half, the Dash worked to find an equalizer while Campbell made several important saves to keep the deficit at one goal. Houston's defense remained organized and prevented Gotham from adding to its lead before halftime.
The second half followed a similar script as the Dash pushed forward in search of a breakthrough. Houston created several promising attacking moments and increased the pressure as the match wore on, but Gotham's defense stood firm.
In the closing stages, the Dash threw numbers forward in an attempt to rescue a point before the World Cup break. Despite the effort and determination shown throughout the night, Houston could not find the back of the net, and Gotham held on for the 1-0 victory.
Although the result was disappointing, the return of Campbell provided a bright spot for Houston. The Dash captain looked comfortable in her return from injury and delivered the leadership and composure that have made her one of the club's most important players. The loss sends Houston into the World Cup break in 11th place in the NWSL standings. With several weeks to regroup and recharge, the Dash will look to return stronger and make a push up the table when league action resumes.
While the road trip ended in disappointment, Houston will take confidence from the return of its captain as the club prepares for the second half of the 2026 season.
