Dash Fall 3–2 to Washington Spirit Despite Miljana Ivanović’s Brace
The Houston Dash suffered a heartbreaking 3–2 defeat to the Washington Spirit, despite a standout performance from Miljana Ivanović, who scored her first two goals with the club.
The Dash came out with eight strong minutes to open the match, showing energy and attacking intent. Early on, Houston looked comfortable and appeared ready to take control of the game. However, after those opening minutes, the momentum began to shift toward Washington.
The Spirit started controlling possession and creating more pressure, eventually opening the scoring in the 12th minute through Tara Rudd.
But Ivanović quickly made her mark.
In the 44th minute, Ivanović found the back of the net with a beautiful finish, scoring her first goal with the Dash and sending Houston into halftime level at 1–1.
Washington responded after halftime, with Sofia Cantore scoring in the 51st minute to put the Spirit back in front.
The Serbian forward wasn’t finished.
In the 59th minute, Ivanović struck again, scoring her second goal of the night and completing her brace. The goal brought Houston level at 2–2 and gave the Dash renewed momentum.
Washington, however, found the decisive goal late.
Clara Luvanga scored in the 84th minute, completing Washington’s comeback and giving the Spirit a 3–2 victory.
Despite the disappointing result, Ivanović’s performance was a major positive for Houston. Scoring her first two goals in a Dash shirt in the same match gives the team plenty to build on moving forward.
The Dash will have to regroup after twice fighting back in the match, while Washington leaves Houston with all three points.
“It’s a bittersweet game. Now, we’re officially out [of playoff contention]. That’s just heartbreaking in general. Credit to DC [Washington Spirit] they’re a really good team. — The team [Houston Dash] really showed some exciting moments tonight. I’m proud of that. I’m proud of them. We just came up short. It’s a bittersweet result.”
