HOUSTON (Feb. 28, 2026) — Houston Dynamo FC fell 2–0 to LAFC on Saturday night at Shell Energy Stadium, a match defined by two red cards, historic debuts, and a strong visiting performance that extended LAFC’s unbeaten start to the 2026 MLS season.

Dynamo Reduced to Nine Men

Houston’s night took a sharp turn when captain Antônio Carlos received a red card in the first‑half stoppage time for a foul on Son Heung‑Min just outside the box.

The situation worsened in the 76th minute when Agustín Bouzat was also sent off, again for fouling Son as the last defender. Playing 11‑v‑9 for the final stretch proved too steep a mountain for the Dynamo to climb.

Following the match, Houston pool reporters Dustyn Richardson (Bayou City Soccer) and myself submitted a formal question to the PRO referees regarding the first‑half red card shown to Houston defender Antônio Carlos.

We asked: “Houston’s number 3 was sent off in first‑half stoppage time. What did you see that warranted a straight red card?”

The PRO officials provided the following explanation: “Houston #3 endangered the safety of an opponent, using his studs with excessive force to make contact with the Achilles and calf of an opponent.”

LAFC’s Second-Half Breakthrough

Despite Houston’s defensive resilience, LAFC capitalized in the second half.

  • Mark Delgado opened the scoring in the 56th minute with a curling strike from distance.

  • Stephen Eustáquio doubled the lead in the 82nd minute, firing a shot into the bottom-left corner from outside the box, his first goal for LAFC since joining from FC Porto.

LAFC controlled the majority of the match, finishing with 70.9% possession, 18 total shots, and 6 shots on target, compared to Houston’s 29.1% possession and 3 shots on target.

Goalkeeper Hugo Lloris secured his second straight clean sheet to start the MLS season.

Historic and Notable Dynamo Debuts

Despite the loss, the match marked a significant moment in club history:

Matthew Arana Makes Record-Breaking Debut

At 15 years old, midfielder Matthew Arana became the youngest player in club history to earn first-team minutes when he entered in the 88th minute. He surpassed the previous record held by Juan Castilla, who debuted at 17 in 2021.

Agustín Resch Makes MLS Debut

Rookie defender Agustín Resch, signed on a short-term loan for the match, came on at the start of the second half. The 2026 SuperDraft pick from Seton Hall added physicality to the back line.

Héctor Herrera Returns to the Pitch

Club Legend Héctor Herrera made his first Dynamo appearance since 2024, entering in the 76th minute to loud applause from the sellout crowd. The Mexican international rejoined Houston this offseason.

Key Moments and Chances

  • 16' — Houston Chance: Jack McGlynn connected with Antônio Carlos for a header that forced a save from Hugo Lloris.

  • 37' — Bond Double Save: Jonathan Bond denied Denis Bouanga and then Son Heung‑Min within seconds, showcasing elite reflexes. Bond finished with four saves.

  • 47' — Bouzat Hits the Crossbar: A long-range attempt from near midfield nearly stunned LAFC.

  • 53' — Another Bond Save: Bond again stopped Son at close range to keep the match level early in the second half.

  • 86' — Houston Late Push: Lawrence Ennali dribbled into the box and forced Lloris into a low save, one of Houston’s best chances of the night.

Looking Ahead

Despite the officiating explanation, it’s still unfortunate how significantly the red cards influenced the match. The Dynamo had been containing LAFC’s dangerous attacking trio of Son Heung‑Min, Denis Bouanga, and David Martínez extremely well up to that point, showing strong defensive organization in front of a sold‑out Houston crowd. The dismissals not only shaped the final result but also deprived Houston of a valuable early‑season measuring stick against one of the league’s top teams.

LAFC’s victory marks their first win in Houston since 2019, continuing a dominant start to the 2026 season as they move to 2‑0‑0 in league play.

Houston, now 1‑1‑0, will look to regroup after a difficult match impacted heavily by disciplinary decisions. The Dynamo’s March 7 matchup with the New England Revolution has been postponed because of severe weather, with a new date still to be determined. Houston will instead take the field next on March 14 as they welcome the Portland Timbers to Shell Energy Stadium.
